Welcome to the East Sutherland Camera Club

2021-22 Season developments and a return to a degree of normality

During the summer we surveyed our members as to what they wanted to do should the Brora Community Centre open as the Covid threat reduced. A majority suggested a cautious approach holding only one meeting a month in the Community Centre. The Centre is now available and we have taken the decision to hold our fourth Tuesday of the month meeting in the Centre. Starting, as before, at 7pm. The first meeting there will be on Tuesday 25 January. The other monthly meeting will be, as now, on Zoom. We hope to make the Centre meetings hybrid so that members can still join via Zoom if they wish.

We know quite a number of our past members did not want to re-join the club if only Zoom meetings were available. The Zoom meetings have often been very good and have kept the momentum of the club going but face to face social contact is a key element of any club and we hope this return to a degree of normality will encourage folk to join. The membership subscription from January will be reduced to £15.

New members and members re-joining can send a request to join the club through the Contact us tab on the menu bar.

About the club

Our club is very much member orientated and we aim to respond to the needs of our members in the way we organise our programme of meetings and activities. The encouraging response to our recent questionnaire has helped us tailor this. Certainly we are enthusiastic about our photography but recognise that not everyone who enjoys taking photographs has the desire to operate at an advanced level. Our membership ranges from the experienced to the beginner. We are committed to sharing knowledge through informal discussions, guest speakers, training sessions, field trips and, where requested, one-to-one help and guidance on most aspects of photography. If you are a beginner you never need feel out of your depth. Whatever your level of photographic knowledge and camera skills you will be made welcome. In addition we are involved in community events through our photography.

Field Trips and Training

This year we will organise day/half day and evening field trips on average once a month. It was clear from our recent questionnaire that there is an appetite for more formalised training and we will be instituting a programme which starts with the basics and moves forward to more advanced techniques and genres.

You can enter your photographs in our competitions - see Competitions page. You don’t have to, but it is friendly fun and a learning experience. During the season we have six competitions. In three of the competitions club members vote for their top four in the classes of Colour and Monochrome. In the other three competitions we have an external judge. In all cases feedback is constructive and helpful. All competitions are JPEG entries which are made on-line through this web site where member viewing and voting takes place. Over the year points are awarded and trophies presented at the Annual Competition.

Each year - 2021 being the exception - the club takes part in the Highland Challenge - a competition between all the clubs in the north Highlands. The next competition will be in the autumn of 2022 and will be hosted by Cromarty Camera Club.
